The Ordinary has recently amassed a reverent following, having their products make their way into most skincare enthusiasts routines.
(Anyone else guilty of always having two bottles of Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%? It’s not just me right?)
It’s easy to see why. Their serums are affordable, simple, and deliver results.
An array of designer brands tout expensive lines of skincare products in the beauty industry, however in many cases, simple serums can be just as effective, which The Ordinary boldly proves.
With most products priced around $15 – $10, there really is not much to lose, if you haven’t taken the dive already.
The Ordinary as a brand takes a refreshing minimalist approach to all facets of their products, including the colours, bottles and labelling, as well as the ingredients themselves.
Because of this, all the serums names are simply the active ingredients, which can be rather a mouthful to say, and also difficult to understand.
With each product, we’ll do the heavy lifting for you, and break down what each product does.
You can thank us later.
Lastly, an important aspect to remember when considering these listed products, is that your own mileage may vary.
In other words, it’s impossible to say for sure, how your skin will react.
Perhaps 99 people will experience results, but for whatever reason, your body will hate it.
Everyone’s different, and everyone has their own extremely unique set of skin.
Best The Ordinary Product For Skin Texture
The Ordinary Lactic Acid 5% + Ha 2%
The first few things to keep in mind about lactic acid, is that it’s strong, and it exfoliates. Because of this, it’s not a serum you would want to be applying every day.
It can be used a few times a week, ideally in the PM, to resurface new skin, and promote a bright and smooth complexion. It’s worth checking out if you have:
- Acne and breakouts
- Uneven skin tone
- Oily skin
(If you’re like me, and have all of the above, start with the 5% lactic acid and build your way up to 10%).
If you’re looking to improve skin texture, it’s easily one of the best The Ordinary products to try.
As soon as I started using it, it left a lovely glow to my skin, and kept it moisturised throughout the night. I got some big spots all over for 2-3 weeks, and now my skin is almost completely clear, with an improved texture. – Emi
Best The Ordinary Product For Skin Smoothness
The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% 30ml
This serum has become a holy grail product for countless skincare addicts; and for good reason.
It aides in smoothing skin, and helps with scaring and dark spots.
Don’t be swayed if you don’t see results straight away – it does take time, but the end result is worth it.
As it’s cheap in price, yet effective, it’s truly become one of the best The Ordinary products. Skin concerns it can help with:
- sensitivity and redness
- pigmentation and dark spots
- acne and breakouts
I use this every morning and night. Have been for the past four months and my skin is loving it!!! I use to get pimples pretty regularly but haven’t for awhile. – Amanda
Best The Ordinary Product For Oily Skin
The Ordinary 100% Organic Cold-Pressed Rose Hip Seed Oil
If you haven’t experimented with rose hip seed oil before, this is the perfect starting point!
It’s perfect to mix in with aloe gel for the perfect moisturiser, or added earlier in the routine to retain moisture. Perfect for:
- dehydrated skin
- Oily skin (The more moisture, the less natural oil your body has to produce)
This oil is easily one of the best The Ordinary products for dehydrated or oily skin.
Bought this for my face and I absolutely love it. I have tried many expensive face creams but this oil beats them all. – B.P
Best The Ordinary Product For Dry Skin
The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 30ml
Moisture! This hyaluronic acid is perfect for all skin types, and works amazingly as an extra step to lock in more moisture.
The hyaluronic acid, or HA, can actually attract up to 1,000 times its own weight in water.
Makes sense as to why it’s so effective right?
My skin has responded in ways I hadn’t thought of. All of my face is smoother, acne more under control, products go on smoother and I need less of them as well. My skin tone in more even, less reddish pink from current and past acne. – V.L
Best The Ordinary Product For Exfoliation
The Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution
From what I can only assume is mind-reading powers, TikTok has started suggesting skincare videos on my #fyp. In those videos, I’ve noticed this Glycolic Acid toner gets the love it deserves!
It’s a strong exfoliator, so be careful and don’t use it too often. It’s great for:
- Dry to oily skin
- acne and pigmentation
- wrinkles and ageing
If you have dull skin, closed comedones, acne, enlarged pores, or fine lines, THIS IS THE PRODUCT FOR YOU! – A.R
Best The Ordinary Product For Acne Scars
The Ordinary Azelaic Acid Suspension 10%
My personal (and others) Holy Grail product from The Ordinary! This suspension has a thick, creamy consistency, and is best applied at night.
A significant reason I like it so much, is how quickly you’ll see results!
After only a few nights of its use, I noticed my skin was visibly brighter, smoother and vibrant.
It is particularly effective against acne scars, and pigmentation.
Your own mileage may vary, but I would highly recommend giving it a try.
Wow! This stuff has worked wonders for my facial redness (general redness in the face, a lot of acne as a teen and probably a touch of mild rosacea). I’ve been using this twice a day for a couple weeks in conjunction with The Ordinary’s niacinimide and my redness has subsided quite a bit. In fact, I noticed almost immediate results the first time I used it.- I.H
Best The Ordinary Product For Light Hydration
The Ordinary Marine Hyaluronics
Moisture! but a less thick consistency, and with helpful marine bacteria.
Many find the Hyaluronic Acid 2% to too heavy and thick on their skin, which presents this as a better alternative.
It comes down to personal preference – I prefer the marine version, and if you like more lightweight serums, you might too.
This is a great product, especially if you’re not fully into traditional hyaluronic acid. I apply onto damp skin and pat in. Sometimes, I’ll go a second time, too, right before other serums and moisturizer. It’s been a life saver in the winter. – A.S
Best The Ordinary Product For Dark Circles
The Ordinary Caffeine Solution 5% + EGCG
It unfortunately comes down to your genes, but some people (Me) suffer from dark circles and puffiness beneath our eyes. I, for example, perpetually look like I haven’t gotten enough sleep.
To be completely fair, a lot of days I don’t.
With a 5% concentration of caffeine, and highly-purified Epigallocatechin Gallatyl Glucoside (EGCG) from green tea leaves, this serum can get you looking definitely-absolutely-very-well-rested.
This product is AMAZING. I noticed that suddenly in my mid thirties I developed major bags and discoloration under my eyes. After looking around and reading reviews of probably 20 products, I ordered this and won’t look back! – Liz
That’s it! There’s enough amazing products here for you to get started on your ‘The Ordinary’ journey.
Skincare Is Just The Beginning Of Skin Health
Skin health is mostly fought on two fronts: How you treat your skin with products, and your physical health / diet.
The physical health and diet is also unfortunately the most difficult part to maintain.
It’s easy to buy some products and slap them on, but it’s much harder to cut out the foods that are influencing your skin in a negative way.
Things such as dairy, sugar, and meat can all have a huge impact on your skin.
